Savings Due to Relevant Standard Configurations

Posted on: September 21, 2015

Great news this week about the campus-wide cost savings achieved from using standard hardware configurations. Beginning in January of 2011, improved desktop and laptop standard configurations were developed by campus IT professionals and adoption has dramatically grown. Departments across campus recognize the advantages of volume buying power and resulting cost savings. As an example, during the first half of this year, 83% of Dell desktop purchases (882) and 63% of Dell laptop purchases (236) were ordered using the standard configurations. Overall savings to date this year resulting from the adoption of these standard configurations is more than $219,000 over our already discounted UT Catalog pricing on Dell hardware. The success of this initiative is credited to a dedicated group of IT professionals across campus who update the configurations as new technologies are released.

The committee includes representatives from:

  • Aces IT Group
  • Academic Technology Support
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Fine Arts
  • College of Liberal Arts
  • College of Natural Sciences
  • College of Pharmacy
  • Department of Geological Sciences
  • Information Technology Support
  • Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs
  • Moody College of Communication
  • Red McCombs School of Business
  • School of Law
  • Technology Resources
  • University of Texas Libraries

This campus-wide input to develop relevant configurations is why we have been successful. Plus the hard work and attention to detail of our central Purchasing team has saved the University hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past four years. We anticipate this trend will continue.
