Service Awards

Posted on: April 20, 2018

A few weeks back I shared my “aha” moment regarding the Internet of Things (IoT) and how far we expect it to advance in the next few years.  If you remember, the hottest technology ten years ago was the not-yet-year-old iPhone.  Twenty years ago, we were just coming to terms with the idea that a cellular phone could exchange a basic phone call from anywhere!  We had no concept of a smart phone that could keep track of a calendar, notes, calls, messages, books, podcasts, and all of our favorite apps.  Twenty years ago, we began to grasp the power of a server.  Speed was measured in megabytes, and accessing the Internet…was still a mystery to most. Thirty years ago, the “Walkman” was a hot technology for portable music.  The Personal Computer was a concept that only a few could conceptualize, and remember KITT from Knight Rider was our view into the future of artificial intelligence (AI).  Fifty years ago, we were still struggling with the idea of television, and we sometimes picked shows to watch because they were in color.

The people who work in the technology field live in a world of constant change and advancement. Not only must technologists understand the latest, but they must be able to help others understand and anticipate the next technological advance. Careers in this field require the ability to adapt to the challenge, the excitement, the constant state of growth and learning.  Many of us think it the only way to live.

So, where am I headed with this?  Today, we celebrate those folks who have dedicated themselves to technology. We celebrate those members of our team who have dedicated their careers to keeping abreast of or supporting the latest technologies, to helping others adopt and adapt to the constantly changing IT environment, and to those who anticipate technology and ready our campus for change.

Our ITS organization and the University are incredibly fortunate to have decades of technical expertise that support our day-to-day operations.  Thank you to all of our staff for your continued years of support.  Your service does not go un-noticed.

Also – you may have noticed the years of service next to Cole’s name.  No, that is not a typo.  50 years!!  Congratulation Cole – what a milestone.  Team, If you get the chance, please read the article highlighting Cole’s service in the recent edition of FAS Times:  https://newsletter.financials.utexas.edu/news/sound-wizard-marks-50-years-at-ut-austin/.
