UT Research Cyber Infrastructure and Data Management Resources

Posted on: May 18, 2014

Recently, more than 150 faculty, staff and students attended a seminar about Data Management and the UT Research Cyber Infrastructure (UTRC). Preston Broadfoot, UTRC Director of Communications, UT Systems Administration and Colleen Lyon, Digital Repository Librarian, The University of Texas Libraries, presented updates on the UTRC initiative to provide new capabilities that advance current and future research efforts within all 15 UT System institutions. In conjunction with UTRC, a multidisciplinary team including UT Libraries, the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) and Information Technology Services (ITS) also offers Data Management resources to all faculty, researchers, and students involved in research projects that use, gather, and/or create data.

UTRCs unique capabilities for computational research enables researchers at UT System institutions to make significant discoveries that will benefit society. UTRC provides a combination of High Performance Computing (HPC), a Data Repository (UTDR), and a 10 Gbps network which allows for collaboration between and across disciplines, as well as access to world class resources. UTRC incorporates central and distributed integrated operations connected at high bandwidth and provides Ph.D. consultants to work with researchers in developing applications, managing and analyzing data, and integrating with decentralized resources. The UTRC initiative positions the UT System to lead in computational science research across Texas, to attract more funding, and to recruit and retain the best faculty and graduate students at UT institutions.

To help in the development and stewardship of research data, the Data Management at UT website offers simple access to a host of resources available at UT Austin, as well links to the DMPTool , an easy to use template for creating a data management plan. Attendees at the seminar were very excited about both the UTRC and Data Management resources. If you are unfamiliar with the UTRC or whats available for data management, spend some time exploring these innovative initiatives and encourage researchers across campus to take full advantage of the benefits of these world-class offerings.

In coming months, watch for coordinated communications to spread the word and answer questions about the UTRC and Data Management resources available to UT System researchers.
