Next Generation Network (NGN) Program: Bridge Funding FAQ's

The Next Generation Network project recently secured bridge funding to replace aging building access points (APs) and switches. The following is meant to provide more information on this bridge funding. The funds will cover only new orders as of the date of the memo from Larry Singell, October 25, 2023. Any order already placed with a vendor is not eligible for this funding.

How long is the funding approved for?

This one-time funding is approved for a three-year commitment of the five-year average costs of the access point and switch lifecycle.

What equipment is covered by these funds?

Existing wireless access points, access and distribution layer switches in campus buildings, and labor costs to install.

Are auxiliaries or self -supporting units’ equipment covered by this funding?

No, auxiliary units will still need to budget for network equipment lifecycle expenses.

Are expansions of wireless or wired coverage in scope?

No, the funds are intended to lifecycle existing equipment.

Will the funds cover construction projects?

No. Construction projects will still need to budget for network expenses.

 

Can I get reimbursed for network equipment that has already been purchased?

The funds will cover only new orders as of the date of the memo from Larry Singell, October 25, 2023. Any order already placed with a vendor is not eligible.

Do I need to place an order for the equipment?

No, the lifecycle of the covered equipment will be handled by ITS Networking.

ITS networking will work with units to understand any operational changes that may impact ordering and coordinate scheduling of the installation and cutover to the new equipment.
 

How will ITS determine the installation schedule?

ITS will replace equipment based on lifecycle targets for a given model as well as coordinating installation with the unit TSC based on their unit’s activities.
