Web Central to Retire this Summer 2016

Posted on: April 14, 2016

UT Web is the replacement service for Web Central. Web Central, the University’s legacy web infrastructure solution, is outdated and difficult to maintain. With the endorsement of IT governance, Information Technology Services (ITS) is retiring Web Central and the Unix Timesharing Service (UTS) email service this summer. The Web Central Service Retirement (WCSR) Project is employing a phased migration approach given the large number of website owners and email users who need to archive or migrate websites and email services to new platforms by the end of June, 2016. Currently, ITS is consulting with customers, creating help documentation for constituents to assist in planning the move from Web Central to UT Web, and offering assistance when needed.

At one time, Web Central had more than 2,000+ websites, 10+ million files, and 500 email addresses.

By the end of the project all Web Central websites will be migrated or archived. To date, the WCSR team has communicated with 163 departments and is tracking the disposition of all the websites. The great news is 287 sites (2.2 million files) have already been migrated, and 1,153 sites have been archived (2.4 million files). In addition, 553 websites are on track to be migrated by the end of June 2016.

The WCSR project team is also assisting in the transition of 69 active @uts.cc.utexas.edu and 26 @www.utexas.edu email addresses. The project team continues to contact all UTS owners and all email users with active @uts.cc.utexas.edu and @www.utexas.edu email addresses to ensure all necessary actions are taken as planned.

Accomplishing this transition to the new UT Web infrastructure is requiring time, effort and dedication from IT and other staff across campus. ITS is grateful for all the help and support received from the community and looks forward to celebrating the completion of the WCSR project by the end of the summer. Thank you all for the work you are doing to help achieve this goal!

Special thanks also go to the project team – Jenn Coast, Kathy Perry, Mic Kaczmarczik, James Russell, Steve Walker and Christina Konstantinidou who are doing an amazing job shepherding this project to completion.
